The first half of this eighth offering from Alex G is a serene and docile affair – beautiful melodies are draped around complex ideas; some folk, some country and a little bit of what’s in between means you’re all the more susceptible for the barrage that comes from middle point ‘Bridge’.
Furious and sounding like the soundtrack from a Guy Ritchie film, it’s distorted to the max and completely sideswipes your expectations. Though ‘Bridge’ is an anomaly, something of a pallet cleanser, it serves more as a reminder that Alex G might craft these pleasant ditties but beneath all this lies a sharp mind that is as filled with musical sensibility as it is fire.
Littered throughout also are duets that accentuate the melodies Alex G crafts. ‘Bobby’ is the first example, with frequent collaborator Emily Yacina’s voice taking on a similarly vulnerable shake like Alex’s does – a perfect matching. ‘Rocket’ is rife with earnest truths that do little to take themselves seriously, making it a quintessential staple of Alex G and all of his efforts.
