During this disjointed year, Dizzy made the most of their downtime, taking to sharing covers on YouTube. And so, their resulting ‘Basement Covers’ EP does what it says on the tin: covers, recorded in their basement. Simple yet effective, guys – we dig it.
The most abstract cover here is ‘This Must Be The Place’ by Talking Heads, where they strip the song back to its bare bones, making it almost unrecognisable as they add an eerie overtone to the cult classic. The new outlook gives it additional poignancy in this lockdown world we find ourselves in, as lead singer Katie Munshaw asserts: “It seemed like the perfect push and pull between being on the road and missing home, and missing being on tour with your band while being stuck in quarantine.” The stripped-back acoustics of the cover are quite stark, putting into perspective what was once a wish: “Home is where I want to be”.
Collecting their favourite songs across genres and putting a twist on their most beloved tracks, ranging from The National (‘Light Years’) to Britney Spears (‘Lucky’), Dizzy have made a series of staples sound as though they’ve always been theirs.
