There’s a fresh pot of gnarly post-punk on the boil in Leeds and its name is English Teacher.
With a handful of singles under their belt thus far (including the highly infectious ‘R&B’), their ‘Polyawkward’ EP is an exhibition in the seedy tone and bass-heavy stylings that English Teacher have to offer.
As well as a reference to a poem about a man with three testicles, the EP’s titular track is an ode to lead singer Lily Fontaine’s social discomfort. Every song is chock-full of adolescent neurosis delivered with a delicate maturity.
Whether reeling with beer fear in ‘A55’ or filled with the giddy butterflies of a first date in ‘Yorkshire Tapas’, English Teacher have expertly translated anxieties into bangers – and you can’t help but hope for more of it.
