Pop doesn’t just have to arrive on huge labels pumping untold wealths into the promise of success ‘down the line’. Pop can exist in any space where creativity and the desire to connect thrives.

Just take FEMME – from touring with Queen of Everything Good Charli XCX to forming part of Ultraísta with Radiohead’s long time collaborator Nigel Godrich – she’s definitely got experience under her belt as she goes into ‘Debutante’, her debut full-length. And yet she’s doing this off her own bat.

That means she can do what she want, which can be a double edged sword in itself. Many may find themselves following good intentions down paths of badly realised ideas. Not here though.

‘Fever Boy’ and ‘Romeo’ show an artist determined to bring the party, come what may. ’S.O.S.’ is an 80s delight, while ‘Double Trouble’ takes a more introspective curve.

With opener ‘Your Poptarts Are Ready’ packed with messages of support from fans, ‘Debutante’ proves one thing. If you’ve got the vision to make it happen, support doesn’t have to come from the fat cats. The power of a pop song can unite no matter what.
