Dark days, indeed. It’s no news to anyone to suggest that the world has gone to shit. Those who suggest the silver lining should be found in the art created from that turmoil are probably missing the point – a few ‘made you think’ bangers don’t exactly make up for the suffering of others – but still, there’s no reason you can’t appreciate the fruits of the storm.

That’s Ghostpoet’s position, anyway. By his own admission, “this time around I felt there were specific stories that needed telling”, specifically on ‘Immigrant Boogie’, a stalking, serious cut that humanises the thoughts of those fleeing for a better life. “Oh let us in / we never bite,” it demands, “it’s just the boat’s going down / and I don’t think we wanna stay.”

‘Dark Days + Canapés’ echoes with the sounds of turmoil. An unease reigns through an enveloping sonic palette, forming diamonds within the maelstrom of unease and fear. It’s doubtlessly Ghostpoet’s most complete and fully-realised record to date. Stephen Ackroyd
