Katy Kirby’s sweet-like-honey voice is enough reason to listen to her debut album, ‘Cool Dry Place’.
While she sings about memories of days gone by, the soft and tender nature of her vocal entices listeners to yearn with her about love, loss, and mint sweets. ‘Eyelids’ sets the tone with melancholy lyrics that dig deep when complemented by eery piano notes, while ‘Juniper’ takes a more light-hearted approach. This stark contrast is also reflected in the varying topics that Katy writes about, making them relatable through vulnerable confessions. ‘Portals’ is a unique moment of reflection, with lyrics that are like an arrow through the heart and the screeching, beautifully messy background sounds that make this a charming yet all-consuming song.
It’s a collection of beautifully Phoebe Bridgers-esque songs that make you feel like you are the main character in a film. On the surface it’s upbeat, but underneath tells deep-rooted tales of life in the modern world.
