Little Dragon - Season High

Little Dragon are right at the top of their game.

Label: Because Music
Released: 14th April 2017
Rating: ★★★★

Swedish quartet Little Dragon’s fifth album ‘Season High’ finds them going ever deeper into the sort of emotion filled club ready bangers that have become their calling card.

They’re a band who’ve always been out on their own, carrying on on their own blissful path, never content to jump on trends or find themselves coasting on a bandwagon. Here, they again showcase an immaculate gift for dynamics and when to bring things up, like on the brash 80s dancefloor banger ‘Celebrate’ and bring things down, like on the stirring dramatic centrepiece ‘Butterflies’.

Much of the beauty within their music comes in the stunning vocals of Yukimi Nagano who shines throughout. It’s her star power and vocal charisma that give pop hits like ‘Sweet’ and ‘Strobe Light’ their bounce and swing. They don’t often get the credit for it, but Little Dragon can dish out bangers with the best of them.

There is added depth to the collection of songs here which all benefit from beefed up production and big, prominent grooves. They even channel old school Chicago house on the sample filled joyous release of ‘Push’. Confidence is coursing through the album’s ten tracks. There’s nothing understated about ‘Season High’. Little Dragon are right at the top of their game. Martyn Young
