There’s an unexpected positivity in Lokoy’s debut album, reminiscent of a livelier time of freedom, with a refreshing and energetic mixture of relatable lyrics and irresistible pop beats. Filled with collaborations giving each song its own story to tell, it feels very much like the creative process was an enjoyable one.
‘Classic City Girl’ is a perfect introduction, sounding like something to listen to speeding through a tunnel at night with flashing lights overhead. ‘Both Eyes’, his collaboration with Safario, is an unforgettable track, while ‘Glitter’ is a purely joyous experience. Finale ‘Ghost Town’ turns the mood right down to a beautifully somber end.
It seems that Lokoy has already established his own solo sound away from Slotface, but has not restricted himself in the slightest. ‘Badminton’ is a charming album, which at the beginning of such an uncertain and dull year for so many people is a pocket of hope that has the potential to brighten another boring day of being stuck inside.
