At some point over the last couple of years, pop got dark.
Maybe not the surface level, unit shifting strand – but under the surface, weird things are afoot. Maggie Lindemann’s new EP is shinier and less subversive than some, but still more comfortable clad in a darker shade of black.
Propulsive and direct, ‘Paranoia’ is effectively pop-rock with an angsty grunge filter, but it works. Opener ‘Knife Under My Pillow’ has a satisfying thump under its sweet sugar melody, ‘GASLIGHT!’ screeches and screams in a way that many others would back away from, and closer ‘It’s Not Your Fault’ finishes with a cry, not a whimper.
Perhaps a little polished to not find itself with a foot in two camps, there’s still a lot to like.
