Now on their 13th studio album, of Montreal have bestowed upon us an electronic and pulsating treat that just shows they aren’t quite done morphing their sound. Normally taking inspiration from the eras around them, here we find them with such a catchy and melodic sound that, quite literally, from the first track you’re addicted.
Drawing from the straightforward indie sound they so encompassed in their earlier years, there’s also major call outs to dance and electronic music, both straight forward beat laden as well as funk drenched. Absolutely irresistible, this is an album that was made to haunt, like a secret dish at that restaurant you can’t quite remember how you ordered.
The female celebratory ode ‘it’s different for girls’ mixes bold and open lyricism such as “it’s different for girls, they don’t spit in streets, they don’t piss on the seats” with a sound that wouldn’t be amiss back in the 2008 electro-indie scene. The wild party continues throughout the entire record with ‘a sport and pastime’ acting like a brief, very mildy. spot of respite. An album you can just hit play and have a good time to, of Montreal have mastered over their career the ability to create not just albums but containers of vibe and atmosphere. Steven Loftin
