Speedy Ortiz frontwoman Sadie Dupuis has long been one of indie rock’s sharpest voices. On ‘Slugger’, her long awaited solo album under the name Sad13, she strikes out on her own making a lighter, sweeter and poppier take on her bands acerbic rock.
Originally recorded into iPhone note function and whipped into shape by Dupuis at home ‘Slugger’ is lo-fi yet bright and shiny at the same time. The electronic melodies are prominent but as ever the words are key. Providing important messages about inclusivity, friendship and relationships, it’s an album that has a lot to say delivered in a fresh and different approach. Martyn Young
