Tegan and Sara always had an ear for the hook – from the point ‘Walking With A Ghost’ first wormed it’s way in, so much has been obvious – but over the last few years, they’ve really put that instinct to work. Previous album ‘Heartthrob’ was an album of glorious, on the sleeve electro-pop that, in it’s own way, shot adrenaline into the entire genre. Their latest, ‘Love You To Death’, goes even further.
A joyous slice of rule-bending, sugar-coated brilliance, it marks the twins out as the de-facto leaders of their field. From the first two tracks to surface the record, the gender-spinning rush of ‘Boyfriend’ and de-facto banger-of-bangers ‘U-Turn’, it’s been obvious that ‘Love You To Death’ could be something great. In fact, it’s even better than that.
With two decades under their belt, any Tegan and Sara song has that magic touch – an instantly recognisable DNA running front to back, top to bottom. Opener ‘That Girl’ is no different, those perfectly winding harmonies working their magic. ‘Stop Desire’, ‘Faint of Heart’, ‘BWU’; these aren’t throw-away pop songs – though they’re capable of matching even the most immediate floor fillers – but perfectly crafted nuggets that nobody else could deliver.
As the pace comes down for ‘100x’, they seal the deal. A chorus big enough to level any foe, instead it’s deconstructed and stripped back to a cutting, emotional piano ballad. With ‘Love You To Death’ Tegan and Sara aren’t just at the top of their class, they’re in a league of their own. [sc name=”stopper” ]
