The Orielles - Silver Dollar Moment

If you look up what a ‘Silver Dollar Moment’ is, you’ll find that it means something that is unexpectedly brilliant. Finding something tremendous in the places you’d least expect. For The Orielles, they’ve always been tremendous, but on their debut album, they manage to surpass even that – a real Gold Dollar Moment, if you will, of a band producing a special collection of tracks that effortlessly fizz through genres and eras with an irresistible charm.

It’s a simply joyous statement of intent of a band, who already at this stage, are unafraid in diving head-first into variety and genres like it’s nobody’s business. The playful calypso smiles of ‘Mango’ and soaring harmonious warmth of ‘Sunflower Seeds’ are infectious in a way that has you craning your neck to think if there’s anything The Orielles wouldn’t try their hat with. Never sitting still, there’s that garage-rock sheen where nothing is too polished, but the assortment of goods underneath rise to the surface every time. Psychy at one moment, post-punk at the next, shoegaze at the one after and soulful at the next – they dip their hands in so many pots that their own eventual pot is rampant in flavour. The organ-woven keys of ‘Liminal Spaces’ raises hairs on the back of your neck, ‘I Only Bought It For The Bottle’ bounces off itself to an overflowing celebration and ‘Old Stuff New Stuff’ manages to sound like a Brazilian carnival hosted by disco pioneers in a band’s rehearsal room – in all the right ways.

‘Silver Dollar Moment’ is a record confident in itself, unafraid in taking itself to new boundaries and smashing them down at the same time. The fact this comes from a debut album is mesmerising, brilliance and pure fun meeting in the middle and throwing a spectrum of confetti in the air to mark it all. We all knew that The Orielles were brilliant, but ‘Silver Dollar Moment’ will have your jaw on the floor in wonder from start to finish. If you didn’t think it was possible, then think again.
