Chapel’s Carter Hardin talks us through the alt-popsters’ brand new lockdown inspired EP.
Alt-pop duo Chapel have made the best of the last year. While most of us may have spent lockdown sat on the sofa, stressing at the news, Carter Hardin (vocals / guitar / kets) and Kortney Grinwis (drumds) were writing new material. They’ve taken those songs and put them together on their brand new EP – fittingly titled ‘Room Service’. Talk about a glow-up, eh? We asked Carter to talk us through it.
Pillow Talk
‘Pillow Talk’ was the last song Kortney, and I finished for this EP. We were waiting for a song to export, and I started just playing some chords on my guitar. We both started singing mumble ideas, and the hook came almost instantly. So instead of finishing what we were doing, we dropped everything and banged out this song. The song was also cathartic for us, because it tackled the anxiety Kortney and I were going through during quarantine.
Miss The Days
Right before the lockdown last year, we were on tour, and on the last night, I was walking alone to our van feeling nostalgic. While in my feels, I begin mumble singing ideas into my voice notes app, which ended up being the hook for this song. Fast forward a few weeks later, this song was the first one we made for the EP. It’s a very short and vulnerable song we both are proud of.
WOW
I really wanted to write a song about being okay with being played by someone, and that is what ‘WOW’ is about. I know it’s definitely not the healthiest thing in the world, but I do feel like a lot of people have been there. Talking back and forth with someone to meet up, but they always bail on you, then text you the next day like everything is okay. The logical thing to do is cut them out and move on, but you don’t.
First Love
‘First Love’ was really fun to write. The song celebrates the special bond you always have with your first love. We have never done production like this before, so it was fun trying out new things. We really leaned into the 70s with the drums, mellotron, and horns. Really happy with how this one turned out.
