Dork fave dodie describes her Really Very Good new EP ‘Hot Mess’ as “a steaming, conflicting pile of raw ideas and feelings; heavy confessions, manic patches matched with seemingly stable moments of realisation and acceptance, painted with flickers of dissociated spiraling”. So we guess… honest? Will honest work? Maybe, rather than try and stick it in our nice little music scribbler boxes, we should just ask dodie herself to run us through it? This is, obviously, an overdone concept intro, because look! We already have, for our latest artist’s guide. Honestly, Dear Reader, we’re such hard work.
‘Hot Mess’ is the result of the messiest, most intense, painful and exhilarating start to the year. It’s a wonky, dramatic but playful cycle – charging forward but around and around, again and again. There are flickers of real moments (I really did dry heave after reading a text) in an overall desperate plea to find a way out that in no way is going to come from me!
‘Got Weird’ was written after a strange date. The whole song can probably be described as; I get the ick with myself whenever I date girls. It might be internalised biphobia, it might be from lack of representation growing up (“no one told me, course I stumbled”) – but regardless, ‘Got Weird’ is about a kiss with a girl on a date following a faux-confident arrangement (“I played the man, and you bought it”), and how clearly, following that, I really have got some “shit to figure out”.
Lockdown 2020 had me spending a lot of time alone, dabbling in dissociation, depression and making furious promises to make sure life would be different soon. I felt feral! Manic, running on absolute fumes. I loved the idea of writing a gang vocal section that sounds like it should eventually be sung amongst friends and drinks and good vibes – but written from a much lonelier past.
No Big Deal (I Love You)
Something unsaid but (maybe) known. An echoey chamber of either a patient understanding or a suppressed wish. I wrote ‘No Big Deal’ on the damn boy’s piano! ■
