Alt-pop up-and-comer renforshort runs us through her new EP, ‘off saint dominique’.
renforshort’s second EP, ‘off saint dominique’ compiles the newcomer’s recent experimentations within alt-pop – including ‘fall apart’, her collab with glaive – into one expansive, six-track parcel. “Sonically there’s inspiration everywhere from hyperpop, to grunge to even almost Disney vibes,” she explains. “But it fits together pretty well.” Here, she talks us through each of the record’s six layers, track by track.
‘wannabe’ is about a person who is basically a chameleon and shapeshifts for every situation to benefit themselves at the expense of other people, and you can just see through that person so well. The production is really interesting and a little bit different from the rest of my stuff, it’s a bass-forward song, and the bass feels so heavy, which makes the song super identifiable and catchy.
‘virtual reality’ is about being sick of not having the energy to do anything and feeling like you can’t control being stuck in one place because mentally and physically, it’s too much energy to do anything else. I love this song so much; it feels pretty unique, the chorus and the verses are so different, but they work so well together, and it’s just super catchy, I think.
lust to love
‘lust to love’ is a song that sonically and lyrically I feel in my heart and my body. That’s kind of a hard thing to elaborate on, but there’s so much truth to the lyrics, which basically talk about longing for something that you can’t have. It’s an interesting perspective for me because I’m never able to make the first move and the song is just about all the emotions you feel when you have all these feelings for another person that you can’t express. The production after the chorus when the drop happens feels like a release and kind of like I’ve gotten things off of my chest after I described my feelings in the lyrics.
‘fall apart’, to me, it’s just a vibe. It’s not saying too much in the lyrics, and I didn’t want it to because I like the way that the track itself feels. The courses are super chill and quiet, and the courses go pretty hard, and I like that dynamic it feels like everything is building up in the verses just to be let out on the choruses and then when glaive comes in, it brings it a whole different life, and he killed it.
‘exception’ is a slower one, and it’s about unattainable love. I love the strings in the song; it brings it together really well! I also love the message of not being able to love someone because it’s not realistic, it feels like something a lot of people go through, and it’s a pretty bad feeling.
this is just a story
‘this is just a story’ is just a conclusion song. It wraps up everything I’ve been trying to say in the EP pretty well in one song. This song is mostly in the lyrics; I love the production and the feeling you get from it when the buildup happens at the end of the song, and then it goes back to the introduction. It feels hectic, like my life felt just to go right back to calm, kind of like everything ends up being ok in the end.
