A few weeks back, Midlands indie bunch Violet released their debut EP ‘Feels Like Heaven’ via HolyHowl – a charming record influenced by the very best of 90s grunge, pop loveliness and indie feels. A statement of intent for the year ahead, it marks the band out as a welcome companion to the increasingly harsh landscape of 2020. Here, Violet talk us through the four-song EP, track by track.
It’s all about that bassline, aptly titled ‘sexy bass’ until a few weeks before release, personally I reckon this song contains the best section in the whole EP after the second chorus. The song is written about those times when you just feel a bit jaded by the future and where you’ll be and want to be in a few years time even though it’s probably not worth thinking about.
‘Pure Blue’ is a groovy cacophony of little ideas we loved from a load of our discarded tunes, sparked from a cheesy rendition of Randy Newman’s ‘You’ve Got A Friend In Me’. The song tries to encapsulate those dreams that are indistinguishable from real life, that bring back memories and feelings that you’d masked or never even knew you had.
In all honesty, collectively, this is probably our favourite tune on the EP, it’s a little slower, little more mellow and supremely intelligent as it’s written in 3/4. It was the last song written on the EP and me and patch sat in candlelight in my flat in Brum til’ about 3am and finished it within the night which is pretty rare for us.
Shiver was the first song that we wrote for the EP and its working title til’ very last minute was big beat, which in all fairness, is a reasonable summary of the tune. It kind of was the catalyst for the whole EP and dictated a bit of a slight change in direction for us so it’s a little important to us. Got to get all ‘A Day in the Life’ on the middle 8 as well which was really fun.
