Getting to know… Bilk

  • May 4, 2020

Sometimes when you ask a band some questions, they go on and on and on, and you learn all sorts about how their nan’s dog’s groomer’s avocado allergy makes them feel, and how it was instrumental in them discovering their sound. Sometimes, all you find out is that they like making music and have a new single coming soon. You can probably guess where this is going. Ahead of their set at Homeschool this very weekend, singer-guitarist Sol Abrahams from Essex trio Bilk has offered up a little more insight into his band, an immensely fun bunch who are too busy chilling to answer daft questions.

Hey Sol, how’s it going? Are you guys self-isolating at the mo?

Yeah, we are self-isolating.

How are you finding it, do you have lots to be getting on with?

It’s alright. It’s a bit long because we can’t go to the pub and go do stuff with mates or whatever but it’s good because it’s plenty of time to write new tunes.

Tell us about your band then – who are you all, and where did you meet?

I’m Sol; I play guitar and sing/rap. Harry is on drums, and Luke is on bass. We met through Instagram. I needed some new members for my band, and I saw they liked the same kinda things as me, so I hit them up.

What do you most enjoy writing songs about? Is there a particular vibe you aim for?

Nah, I just write songs about whatever is going on at the time and how I feel or what I’m thinking about.

Have you always wanted to be a musician? Did you have a musical upbringing?
I wanted to be a footballer as a kid but didn’t make my school’s team, so I cried and picked up a guitar.

Are you creative in non-musical ways too?

Yeah, anything creative is good.

What do you do for fun?

Make music, listen to music and get mashed.

What’s been the highlight of your time as a musician so far?

Don’t really know. A lot of cool stuff has happened. Maybe playing Reading & Leeds.

Do you have new music ‘in the works’? Are you set up to record from home?

Yeah, we’ve got a new song coming out shortly actually!

What are the next few months going to look like for Bilk, do you think?

Writing loads of songs and chilling.

Bilk are taking part in new online festival Homeschool, which runs from 8th-10th May – visit homeschoolfest.com for details.
