Dork’s number one rule of new acts is pretty simple. Attitude above everything. You can be as good as you like at ‘the music’ – and trust us, Mollie Coddled is – but if you don’t have that personality, good luck keeping our hyperactive attention. When it comes to Proper Future Pop Stars, our Mol is already proving herself a top of the table challenger. Just one listen to recent singles ‘Guilt Trip’, ‘Burden’ and ‘Lonely Bitch’ should tell you that.
It’s enough for us to have begged for her attendance at this weekend’s Dork’s Day Out extravaganza (get tickets here) – a request she’s so graciously accepted. So, we figured, why not get to know the future megastar a bit better first…
Hi Mollie, how’s it going? What are you up to today?
Hiiii! I’m good! Just preparing for some gigs I have coming up soon! Been rehearsing a lot with the band and also finishing up some new tunes for autumn!
Tell us about getting your start in music – how did you go from listening to creating?
Oh wow, well, I’ve always been a musician since I was a kid; I played piano and clarinet in primary school, started guitar when I was 13, and it went from there really! I didn’t start writing tunes till I was 16, though. I like to use writing as kind of an emotional outlet, so that’s why I write songs.
What’s the best song you’ve released so far?
Oooh, that’s a hard question, haha, cause I love all of my songs or else I wouldn’t put them out, BUT probably ‘Lonely Bitch’. However, my favourite is one I haven’t released yet mwa ha haaaaa 😉 (you’ll hear it soon dw).
What do you most enjoy writing about, generally?
I don’t really enjoy writing lyrics per se; it’s more of just getting my emotions out and onto paper, but the production is really what I love doing – manipulating the sound and creating a soundscape that conveys my emotions. I find it really cool to be able to have mental energy in a tangible, listenable form.
Are you creative in non-musical ways too?
Hell yeah, I’ve always been an artist; I love drawing and painting expressively. I’ve given myself loads of tattoos too, haha. I write poetry sometimes, and I create all of my own graphics, artwork and music videos. I’m just an all-round creative boss, tbf, haha!
What do you do for fun?
I love nature! Kayaking, hiking, wild swimming – I’m always out and about. At night, I might sound boring, but at the end of the day, after lots of hard work, I like to just chill out, eat my favourite food and watch a movie. Feel mentally geriatric, but I definably don’t have the energy or enthusiasm for going out clubbing, haha.
What would you most like to achieve during your music career?
I would really love to get to a point where I have a crowd big enough so I can sustain my living just from creating and sharing my music. My main goal is to avoid a 9-5 job at all costs, so I really just want to keep writing and sharing, and hopefully, people will come to love my music as much as I do! Releasing music on vinyl and touring the world would be pretty incredible! That’s the goal, I reckon!!
What are you working on right now?
Top secret you’ll have to stay tuned via my social medias 😉 @mollieiscoddled
Who do you think is the most exciting band or musician around right now?
I really love New Dad; anything dreamy is totally up my alley, and they’re filling my emotional void perfectly, hahah.
Tell us a secret about yourself?
I’m the world champion skydiving champion, won gold at the London Olympics 2012 xox.
Dork’s Day Out takes place this Saturday, 6th August. Get tickets here.
