London-via-Brazil newcomer Nonô writes infectious, no-nonsense electro-pop influenced by her own take on UK garage and 90s R&B; latest tune ‘Nothing To Me’ see her kick back at time wasters, previous single ‘Bite’ ponders a drama-filled relationship, and ‘Blind To You’ laments the haterz. She’s set for a banger-packed 2019.
Hey Nonô, how’s it going? Have you had a good 2018?
I’m great! Excited to be finally releasing original material, 2018’s been awesome! How are you guys?
When did you realise you wanted to make music?
I think I’ve always wanted to become a singer and make music, especially after I saw the movie Dreamgirls with Jennifer Hudson and Beyoncé which was when I was about 8/9 years old.
Who was your first ever favourite band or pop star?
JONAS BROTHERS (I will tell no lies, don’t even try to shame me haha – I was completely obsessed).
What brought you to London?
Music! I noticed that I preferred singing and writing songs in English and it didn’t make any sense to stay in Brasil if I wasn’t going to be singing in Portuguese.
How is life in the UK different from Brazil?
Here in the UK, I am much more independent. It’s so easy to get around in London, I can get to any session, and I also get to work with people from around the world. Whereas in São Paulo or Rio, it’s a bit hard to get to most places and you always have to be on guard depending on where you’re going. Still, I love both countries very much.
What do you do for fun?
I usually binge watch a bunch of TV series or movies or play video games (mainly Counter Strike) or do a chill hangout day with my friends.
What would you most like to achieve during your music career?
World domination, Pinky!
What’s been the highlight of your time as a musician so far?
I loved doing sessions in Sweden, in LA and of course, in London. I believe the highlight for me was meeting people in the music industry that had and have a real passion for music. Producers, songwriters, musicians, sound engineers, people that want to create something unique together.
What are you working on right now?
At the moment, I am writing and recording new songs and possibly next year singles!
Who do you think is the most exciting band or musician around right now?
I really like Noname and Kali Uchis; they’re both amazing musicians!
What’s on your bucket list for 2019?
Do loads of live shows – I would love to do festivals!
Release more music.
Try to become a pescatarian? (This one is a hard one).
