Getting to Know… Pizzagirl

  • Dork
  • October 23, 2018

Pizzagirl isn’t a pizza. Or a girl. Instead, he’s Liam Brown, a lovely chap who is dropping a brand new single, ‘body part’, today. It’s a birrova banger.

Part of his second EP ‘season 2’, which is set to arrive on 30th November, he’s smart enough to work out that Dork is a fine place to debut his latest cut. Clever boy. We caught up with him to find out more about what to expect.

Hi Pizzagirl, how’s it going? Had a good 2018 so far?
Hey my guys! I’m doing very well tysm! I’ve had a pretty cool 2018 so far, I had a chance to play a lot of steamy and special gigs in the ol’ UK and Europe and released some of my bedroom beats into the world! I made some juicy friends along the way, I also shaved all my hair off and ate a lot of pizza pie, so I think it’s going quite okay! .. so far!

What or who inspired you to get into music?
When I was a Pizzachild I always had a strange love for the music in adverts (especially car adverts) and that coupled with the 80s soundtracks I used to listen to on the way to school in the car with my mamasita would maybe make an expert therapist say that it planted the seed for me to want to make some beats of my own! I also just really like music too which probably helps!

What was the music scene like in the area you grew up in?
I think growing up in Liverpool you can’t help but be drowned in Beatles music most of your childhood/teen life by family and friends etc. so I think that may have rubbed off on many of the creative people who make music in today’s scene. I think the Liverpool music landscape though is a lot broader now which is cool because it shows that there is so many other interesting musical things going down in the Lpool!

Tell us about your new single, ‘body part’?
‘body part’ is definitely a darker cut on the “season 2” pie, I think it’s like the glitchy and more emo cousin to the last single “gymnasium”. It’s nice to show off a fun side but also a little sadder side to the EP too! It still is jam PACKED with all those 80s synth sounds that I really love a lot but also sprinkles a bit of modern pop for taste to get that musical palette PUMPED!

How did you go about putting together the EP it’s from, ‘season 2’?
‘season 2’ is a bit of an ode to all the sonically cheesy and tacky flavours from 80s/90s films that I’m really into! I sent a lot of music to my label masters, and we filtered them down to a nice collection of tracks that had a nice blend of throwback sounds with also some modern electronic twists in there! I think it’s worked out quite nicely and I’m aching to share all the songs with ya!

“I’m working on some festive musical treats for the Christmas season for y’all”

What else are you working on at the mo?
I’m trying to keep my lanky body as active and as shredded as possible! I’m working on some festive musical treats for the Christmas season for y’all and also working on making the live shows as fun as they can be in time for the December tour rockstar shows which I am extremely keen on playing!!!

You utilise a lot of 80s/90s imagery, do you think you’ll eventually move on to a different aesthetic or is this ‘the one’ for you?
As much as I love the 80s/90s imagery, I think it’s healthy to always be on the lookout for new roads to cruise down creatively. I think it keeps it fresh for everyone if there’s a nice evolution to the aesthetic of Pizzagirl, I’m always down for changing looks and styles and trying out new beats and eras, why not!!

Are you creative in non-musical ways too?
I really love film, and if I weren’t making music in my little beatzzeria, then I’d hopefully have something to do with the art of the big screen. I like to edit all the music videos and Instagram posts in my own little way to have another outlet besides music to go a bit weird with. I like to get creative with food although the peak of my skills in the kitchen is mixing cream cheese with Oreos which I think is a winning combination?

What would you most like to achieve during your music career?
I’d like to look back on my musical life as an old Pizzagirl and have a nice body of work to be proud of and for people to have got something from the simple lil’ tunes I make! It’d be nice in the short term to have my tunes on an advert to almost come full circle that would be pretty cute!

Who do you think is the most exciting band or musician around right now?
There’s a lot of cool cats that I think are really doing some interesting stuff, I’m always excited to see what guys like Grimes and Kero Kero Bonito are doing, and I’ve also been listening to a guy with my bud called Jack Stauber who I think’s extra cool too!

What’s on your bucket list for 2019?
I’m looking forward to flop into another year as Pizzagirl and hopefully make some new friends and travel to different countries and play some rockstar shows to new faces in new cities and maybe serve out some more tunes too! Trying some new exotic pizza flavours and dying my hair blonde could be a bonus box to tick off!
