Getting to know… Psychedelic Porn Crumpets

  • Dork
  • November 29, 2018

It’s a good day for Aussie newcomers Psychedelic Porn Crumpets – the band have just been announced for The Great Escape 2019, where they’ll trade their chilled-out sunny climes for pebbles and teeth-chipping rock, and they’ve a new video for noodly, fuzzy psych banger ‘My Friend’s A Liquid’, too.

“‘My Friend’s A Liquid’ is themed around the aftermath of a festival, a collection of loose screws fallen from the same machine now singularly apparent once more,” says vocalist Jack McEwan. “It’s almost a collage of a track so we wanted to theme the music video similarly. Jordan [Martin, director] nailed the style and produced a piece of art that accompanies the bouncing rhythm of the song perfectly and leads the viewer off into a cut-out world, a liquid world made of paper.”

Check out ‘My Friend’s A Liquid’ below, and find out more about the foursome after the jump.

Hey Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, how’s it going? Are you lot ready for Christmas yet?
It’s about 200 degrees here at Xmas so not really. We’re enjoying the cooler weather while it lasts.

Your new single ‘My Friend’s A Liquid’ is a fun one, do you often promise to write songs for people off their nut at festivals?
Hahaha, nah that was a one-off. We met some amazing people at Party In The Paddock, and it felt like a nice ‘tilt of the hat’ to base the song around those experiences.

Where does this one rank in your list of best Porn Crumpets songs?
I think it’s up there. It’s definitely a new direction for us. We fell in love with this Mellotron that was sitting in our friend’s studio, so a lot of the songs are themed with that in mind. It gives such a nice warmth to the track and feels playful the whole way through, the same way the album has been thought out.

Tell us about the video’s conception?
We really like that collage style since we started working with Ben Giles who created the track artwork. When we read Jordan’s pitch for the video, it felt like his idea would tie in perfectly with the album concept, and we’re stoked with how it turned out.

What else have you lot got coming up then, is ‘My Friend’s A Liquid’ your last track of 2018?
It’ll be the last track of 2018, but we’ve got an album planned for 2019. Then we’re planning on dropping a few singles early next year in the build-up to the album release.

It feels like you’re spending quite a lot of time in the UK at the mo, coming back again in February – how are you finding life on the road?
It’s a dream really. We never thought we’d get out of Australia, to be honest so to head back so soon is a treat. We’re just trying to build on every tour and keep writing better tunes, so the shows keep progressing.

What’s been the highlight of your time as a musician so far?
The recent European run we went on was incredible. My brother and mate Mike came along for the trip; we spent just over two weeks driving in the same van, playing shows and having a merry old time. There’s a big gap in memory around some of those dates which means it must have been grand.

What do you all do for fun?
Write and record music, and occasionally sample craft beers.

Who do you think is the most exciting band or musician around right now?
Unknown Mortal Orchestra is on another planet right now; King Gizzard has created some of the decades finest work along with Mild High Club and Tame Impala. Recently I’ve been listening to a lot of Perth bands like Grievous Bodily Calm and Haircare’s new single.

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets’ single ‘My Friend’s A Liquid’ is out now. They tour the UK from 20th February.
