Getting to know… Weird Milk

  • Dork
  • July 24, 2019

North London’s Weird Milk are back with their swoonsome new single, ‘Honey, I’m Around’. The follow-up to recent hit ‘Anything You Want’, it takes their retro Beach Boys-inspired croons and beefs them up for sunny day adventures and road trips.

The song arrives ahead of their upcoming set at Truck – which they’ll play alongside Wolf Alice, Foals, Lewis Capaldi and more – as well as an October tour supporting Trudy and the Romance.

Charlie Glover Wright – “drummer, songwriter and one of two small men of the band” – tells us more about his band.

Hey Charlie, how’s summer treating you?

Hey yourself! Summer is treating me very nicely, I have a slight tan, and if I wear a white t-shirt, it shows up very well indeed.

Introduce your band – who are you all, where did you meet, and what do you do?

We are Weird Milk. We are me, Alex, Zach and Blue. Me and Zach were in a band at school and moved to London to pursue the rock ‘n’ roll dream. Alex was my next-door neighbour and childhood friend, and he also moved up to London for the dream. Blue went to the school opposite mine and Zach’s, and we knew each other through mutual friends. We all ended up mucking about in the big smoke and decided to aim our creative laser beams at one target (achieving the dream).

Have you always wanted to be a musician? Is it living up to the hype so far?

I believe I have solidly since I was ten years old, when I was really small, I wanted to be a train driver and then a mad scientist. Then I started hitting the tubs and decided that the music life was for me.

Are you creative in non-musical ways too?

I like to cook. Recently did a pasta dish and it went down a storm. In later life, I shall write a book.

Tell us about your new single, ‘Honey, I’m Around’ – what’s it about? Where did it come from?
‘Honey, I’m Around’ came from Alex. We were listening to Les Baxter, and so the original demo had a bossa nova rhythm which was really cool. Then we completely changed that haha, and in the final band version went for a wall of sound and then a contrasting drier poppy chorus. The intention was to have our older influences there but then have something really current as well. It nods a bit more to the 60’s sound we love than our previous release had, and we wanted it to come through more with this one.

Do you have lots of songs written and raring to go?

We have lots of songs, and there’ll be more releases coming soon, say no more, say no more.

What themes do you most enjoy writing about?

Wherever it takes us really! Got some love ones, some sci-fi ones, you name it – we got it.

What else have you got coming up? There’s the Trudy and the Romance tour, right?

Can’t wait for the tour! Fell in love with Trudy at the end of spring, especially the songs ‘Doghouse’ and ‘That’s not me’. They have that deep yearning in them, and I love how they sound all fuzzy and old which reminds me of The Flamingos serenades album. After that tour, we have a load more shows and more releases which will be announced soon so soon.

Have you spent much time on the road? Any particular highlights?

This tour is our first time on the big road. Can’t wait, I am going to try and be really healthy, totally different from any band stereotype. I plan to go for runs each new town we stop at – gonna be wild.

Is there anything else we should know?

Hmmmmmm not really I don’t think. I hope I have provided some decent light reading and whomever is here with me now they feel content and pleasant. Thanks y’all! See you soon!

Weird Milk play Truck (27th July), Jigsaw Festival (7th August), then tour with Trudy and the Romance from 18th October.
