Ahead of her upcoming set at Homeschool – Dork’s May Bank Holiday online festival-of-sorts, ‘FYI’ – Liverpool-via-Norway newcomer SKIA tells us what she’s up to, from puzzles to live videos. Keep an eye out for her imminent new EP, too.
Hey Skia, how’s it going? Are you doing ok, how’s Liverpool feeling at the mo?
Hiii! I am doing good, thanks for asking! I’m back in Oslo for the time being, so I couldn’t tell you! I hear it’s pretty hot at the minute though.
This virus stuff is a bit much isn’t it, how has it impacted you so far?
Yeah, it’s pretty mad. I went back to Oslo to isolate in March, and I’m still here. I do consider myself lucky to have music to work on, I can make music anywhere, so I’m still doing that. I’m sad I don’t get to hang out with my friends and my band, but we’ve actually been making some live videos and playing music in a new and different way, which has been a lot of fun!
Is the EP still coming in May? It must be nice to have something positive to work towards.
The EP is coming! It does feel really good to have releases scheduled – something to work on and look forward to.
What have you been up to during the lockdown so far, have you picked up any new hobbies?
I’ve found my inner puzzler. I got a hold of a 3000 piece puzzle of St. Peter’s Cathedral in Rome, and I’ve spent over four weeks on it which is just way to much time, to be honest. I’ve been on the brink of giving up several times, but it would be wrong to give up after a month of hard work and dedication.
Are you able to record songs while at home? What’s your usual set up like?
Yes, I am, thank god! All I need is my laptop, mic and interface, and I’m ready to roll whenever and wherever.
If you could only pick one album to be on lockdown with, what would it be?
I do get restless and like to bounce between artists and genres, but If I HAD to pick just one album, it would be Angèle’s ‘Brol La Suite’. It sounds and feels like spring, and it triggers happy memories for me.
What do you miss the most with the current restrictions in place?
My friends, my band, and Liverpool.
SKIA is taking part in new online festival Homeschool, which runs from 8th-10th May – visit homeschoolfest.com for details.
