Standon Calling Q+A: Sad Night Dynamite: “I’m trying to enter my bandmate Archie into the dog show. I think he’s got a good chance of winning”

We put together a quick pop questionnaire for the acts playing the Dive Bar, so we could all get to know a little bit more about them. Here's what we got out of Sad Night Dynamite.

It’s July – and that means we’re fast approaching this year’s Standon Calling.

Held between 21st and 24th July, Standon Calling is packed with some Dork-approved talent, the festival features Loyle Carner, Sigrid, Declan McKenna, Self Esteem, The Cribs, Ezra Furman, Yard Act, Dry Cleaning, The Mysterines, Crawlers, Matt Maltese, CMAT, Lime Garden and more.

There’s also Dork’s very own Dive Bar stage, with some of the best emerging talents on the planet, including the likes of Snapped Ankles, Melt Yourself Down, NiNE8 Collective, Bob Vylan, Sad Night Dynamite, Scalping, Swim School, SIPHO, Malady, Ithaca, Mimi Barks, Nukuluk, Pongo, Kojaque, Soccer96, Nuha Ruby Ra, Art School Girlfriend, Keg and Banji.

Hello! Who are we speaking with and how’s it going? What are you up to today?

You are speaking to Archie. Not bad thanks. I’m currently working on some music for an album that will hopefully make me enough money so I don’t have to do this anymore.

It’s nice to have festivals properly back, isn’t it? What have you missed most about the whole festival experience?

It’s great. I’m looking forward to experiencing the more relaxed side of festivals. I haven’t missed waking up face down in the mud.

How do you prepare for spending summers on the road going from field to field?

This will be our first time out doing a festival run. Plenty of vitamins I think.

How would you rate your camping skills out of 10? Are you good at putting up a tent?

I’m terrible at camping. It’s just not for me.

What’s the biggest camping / festival disaster you’ve ever experienced? Any fun stories?

The biggest disaster I had nearly killed me. It was far from fun. I’d like to answer this question in a year’s time. Maybe then I’d have some lighter memories to share.

You’re playing The Dive Bar at Standon Calling this year – are you going to catch any other acts while you’re onsite?

Hopefully gonna catch our boy Kojaque. Also I’ve just seen that Bimini is performing. There’s no chance I’m gonna miss that.

Do you have a favourite Dive Bar (besides Standon Callings, obviously)

There was one dive bar in Chicago behind an ice cream shop which has stayed with me. Unfortunately, once again, I can’t share with you what happened in that dingy hole. But it was the best night of my life.

If you were booking your own festival, which acts would you want to headline?

It would have to be a month-long festival if we were to include all our favourites but forced into a weekend we’d take; Kendrick Lamar, Pink Floyd and The Clash.

Will you be entering the famous Standon Calling Dog Show? And if so show us a pic of your pup!

I’m trying to enter my bandmate Archie into the show as I think he’s got a good chance of winning.

Standon’s theme for the Costume Parade this year is Who Let The Toys Out – what do you bring on tour to keep you entertained and occupied on the road?

Usually it’s our laptops. It’s fun to make beats on the road.

What makes for a good festival set, do you think?

I think it depends, like, if you’re Ed Sheeran I would say don’t remove your top on stage, but then if you were the motley crew I’d say the opposite. Both are good shows.

Festivals aside, what else are you working on at the moment?

Lots of new music.

Sad Night Dynamite play Standon Calling between 21st and 24th July 2022. Tickets are on sale now.
