The mission statement of No Music for Genocide urges artists and labels to engage in a cultural embargo against Israel, citing the nation’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank, its treatment of pro-Palestine activism, and connections between the music industry and military technologies. This initiative coincides with several artists removing their music from Spotify, with some referencing Spotify’s Executive Chair Daniel Ek’s investments in AI military technology.
Björk, who released her latest album ‘Fossora’ in 2022, has recently been active in environmental advocacy, particularly against unsustainable salmon farming in Iceland. Her 2023 collaboration with Rosalía, ‘Oral’, directed proceeds towards a legal case against Norwegian-owned fishing operations. In a post from November 2023, Björk shared a graphic on Instagram illustrating territorial changes between Israel and Palestine since 1946, questioning the notion of sharing with the caption “is this what you call sharing ?”
