The Killers frontman has shared the first single from his first solo album in over a decade.
Brandon Flowers has shared 'Plans', the opening taste of his forthcoming solo record 'Thrasher' — the Killers frontman's first album under his own name in more than ten years, arriving via Island Records on 21st August.
Alongside the single, the singer has mapped out a run of headline shows spanning North America, the UK and Ireland this autumn. Among the British dates is a stop at London's Royal Albert Hall on 15th October.
The record was tracked at Nashville's Historic RCA Studio A with returning producers Shawn Everett and Jonathan Rado. Joining Flowers in the studio were several stalwarts of the city's scene: guitarist David Rawlings, known for his work with Gillian Welch; pedal steel veteran Bruce Bouton; and 85-year-old Charlie McCoy, the harmonica player whose performances feature on each of Bob Dylan's four Nashville albums.
The songs draw heavily from Flowers' upbringing in Nephi, a small town in Utah. Country textures have surfaced periodically throughout The Killers' catalogue — from 2006's 'Sam's Town' through to 'Pressure Machine' in 2021 — but here the form takes centre stage.
"As I've gotten older, I've found my way back to my father's music - 'Country-Western' (as he called it) - and discovered that the stories I carry really feel most at home in the skin of this beautiful American tradition," he says.
Many of the tracks are written in character, lightly disguising tales of people Flowers has known across his life. 'One Of Us' was written for a brother-in-law who died several years ago; 'Miss America' moves from 1980s mall pageants into difficult early memories; 'Paradise' is informed by relatives who have lived and worked within the Las Vegas casino world; and 'Tiger's Blood' revisits the Utah setting of 'Pressure Machine'. Closing track 'An American Dream' finds Flowers thinking of his mother as he watches his father in his final days, driving past billboards about eternity and encountering Elvis behind the wheel of a Tesla. The opener, 'Does It Ever Cross Your Mind?', sets the tone.
