Gang of Youths have shared a new EP, ‘total serene’

  • Stephen Ackroyd
  • July 19, 2021

Gang of Youths have shared a surprise new EP, ‘total serene’ – their first collection of work since their four time ARIA Award winning second album ‘Go Father In Lightness’.

Arriving alongside a brand new single, ‘unison’, the band’s David Le’aupepe explains: “‘unison’ is a deeply important track for us that really signals where the music is headed on the new record. I conceived the song in Samoa, my ancestral homeland. Here we sample and introduce the work of David Fanshawe, who travelled to the Pacific Islands in the 1980s and recorded the most extensive library of indigenous Pacific music anywhere in the world.”

‘unison’ comes alongside a video based on a concept by Le’aupepe, directed by Joel Barney – who also worked on the video for previous single ‘the angel of 8th ave.’. You can check that out below.

Both ‘unison’ and ‘the angel of 8th ave.’ are joined on the new EP by a cover of Elbow‘s ‘Asleep In The Back’.

“We love Elbow and we thought it was thematically relevant,” Le’aupepe says. “It couldn’t have been anything other than ‘Asleep In The Back’.”
