Let’s face it, Dear Reader, we love a band with a bit of personality about them. Yes, bangers are great – we’re all about ‘the bangers’ – but really, if the people behind the music are boring, we’re gonna lose interest pretty damn quick.
Which is partly why we’re so bloody excited about West London upstarts Sports Team, who on our bangers-to-personality reference chart, might actually be the most exciting new band about. And yes, we’re basing this entirely on frontman Alex Rice’s dance moves. It’s a perfectly reasonable conclusion.
Need evidence? Well, rejoice! There’s a brand new single, ‘Margate’, with a video to boot. And yes, that video involves dancing. It all ties up in a neat little bow.
“Margate’s a song about English summers,” the band explain. “Hosepipe bans. Overgrown hedgerows. Frayed tempers. The season of Reeling in the Years and tailbacks on the A303. We went in to record it with Burke [Reid] during the first group stage games, when things were looking up. Some of that optimism rubbed off.”
Basically, that hip shake? That’s John Stones’ second against Panama in the World Cup, that is.
Sports Team will celebrate the new track with a quick coach trip to the titular seaside town tomorrow (3rd August), where they’ll bring ‘over 30’ of their fans to a special launch show. That will be followed up with a headline show at London’s Scala next month, and a stint on the road supporting the mighty Magic Gang.
They’re also set to headline the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading & Leeds later this month. Let’s see if it can contain those moves.
