IDLES’ Joe Talbot explains Notorious B.I.G.’s influence on their most recent album ‘Crawler’

IDLES have revealed Notorious B.I.G. had an influence on one of the tracks from their most recent album, ‘Crawler’.

The band shared a new ‘making of’ video yesterday (21st December), giving fans an inside glimpse into the recording sessions with producer Kenny Beats.

In the video, frontman Joe Talbot discusses the track ‘Crawl!’. He explains how the song was about “being fucked and crawling through life but telling everyone you’re fine all the time.” He then shares how Notorious B.I.G. had influenced the track with his technique of using two different timbres on the song ‘Gimme The Loot’.

“I wanted to do it like [‘Ready To Die’ track] ‘Gimme The Loot’,” Joe explains. “You know, where it [sounds like] two people and it’s the same octave, but he’s [using a] low and high timbre. So he just uses his throat and his diaphragm between two people and it’s fucking sick.”

The band celebrated the five-year anniversary of their debut album ‘Brutalism’ earlier this month by releasing a new edition of the record with alternate artwork designed by Talbot and pressed on cherry red vinyl. Digital versions also included a live album, taken from the band’s secret set on the BBC Introducing Stage during Glastonbury this year.
