Jacklin's Fourth LP was recorded above the Collingwood bar that gives the album its name.
Julia Jacklin has shared 'I Wish', a duet with The Maes' Elsie and Maggie Rigby that closes her forthcoming fourth album 'The Gem'. The record arrives on 25th September through 4AD, with the new single landing today alongside a self-directed video.
The pub that gives the record its title sits in Collingwood, Melbourne. Jacklin first wandered into The Gem shortly after relocating from Sydney in 2017, knowing nobody in the city and using the venue as a way to force herself into new company. Nearly a decade later, between labels and between managers, she rang up owner Robert Muinos, whose Rat Shack studio sits above the bar, and set about making an album on her own terms for the first time.
Jacob Diamond, Mimi Gilbert and Jess Elwood joined her on guitar, bass and drums respectively. The room upstairs was converted hotel accommodation; downstairs, kitchen noise, live bands and the buzz of the neighbouring hairdresser and tattoo parlour seeped into the takes. Late-night recording was off the table out of consideration for residents, and the group broke up sessions by drifting downstairs to catch whoever was playing. Two unannounced sets in the bar itself doubled as live rehearsals before tape rolled.
"I want to love and be loved, but I also want to be free. The tension between those two things has been the central question of my life," Jacklin says of the record's core preoccupation.
"The Gem felt like a metaphor for the whole process, because a lot of it did feel like digging. I felt like I was doing it almost in the dark, just trusting I was going to find something."
On the final day of tracking, one of the bar's staff tattooed the band with matching circles — an opal, Jacklin's gemstone of choice. "It did really feel like we'd done something special together. And I think as a group, it felt important to commemorate it. I'm glad we all have these little gems on us."
The ten-track album, co-produced by Jacklin and Muinos, follows previous single 'Get Away From Me (I Think I'll Love You Soon)'. A run of North American, UK and European headline dates opens in October 2026 and continues through 2027, with tickets on sale now.
