NewDad have covered Charli XCX’s huge pop tune, ‘ILY2’ – a reinterpretation fuelled by their own indie rock stylings.
It is the first release from the Ireland natives since their ‘Banshee’ EP earlier this year – a release that Dork described as, “Sonically expansive and colourful,” in a 4-star review, which you can read online now. Since then, the four-piece band have relocated to London to focus on their debut album.
NewDad’s version of ‘ILY2’ was produced by Jacob Manson and mixed by Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine, Arctic Monkeys, Beach House).
Singer Julie Dawson shares: “We’ve always been huge fans of Charli XCX and thought it could be cool to take one of her songs and make our own version. ‘ILY2’, with its distorted synths, seemed like it could translate very well as a loud shoegazey song so we tried it out!”
A glorious music video has also been released, directed by Hugh Mulhern (Fontaines D.C., The Murder Capital) and styled by Simone Rocha (Billie Eilish, Wolf Alice), and pairs footage of the band with a stylistic framing.
