NoSo‘s new single ‘Suburbia’ is a lovely time all round

LA-based NoSo has announced they’ve signed to Partisan Records, and is celebrating by dropping a brand new single.

Real name Abby Hwong, NoSo graduated from the USC’s music department – the same program as both Remi Wolf and MUNA, ‘FYI’, and is set to drop their debut album next year.

The single, ‘Suburbia’ is packing a gloriously proportioned slice of melodic charm. “Throughout college, I had a weird fear of learning music production,” they explain. “It wasn’t until my senior year that I started messing around with Logic and ended up recording all of the instruments for ‘Suburbia’ (the first song I produced). It felt like I’d finally found my sound.”

“I had the instrumental for a long time without knowing what to write about. One night, I got a drunk FaceTime from my friends in Chicago, and it was the first time in a while I really longed to return to that part of my life. I grew up in a predominately white suburb outside of Chicago (that the movie ‘Mean Girls’ was based on), and had a difficult time navigating the environment. But I had amazing friends who had my back.”

“This song illustrates the absurdities of that suburban town (moms gossiping about teens) and the simple, lovely moments I didn’t register as my childhood, like eating golden Oreos outside a pharmacy with friends I had since kindergarten.”

So there you go. You can check out a Chantel Simpson directed video – inspired by a photograph of an 8-year-old NoSo dressed up for Halloween – below.
