Organ Morgan shares new single, ‘I Just Pretended’, and debut EP, ‘Figurehead’ – listen

Organ Morgan, the musical project of songwriter and guitarist Harris McMillan, has released a new single, ‘I Just Pretended’.

The new track is the final single from his debut EP ‘Figurehead’, which is also out today via Everybody’s.

Organ Morgan is the alter ego of songwriter and guitarist Harris McMillan, previously drummer in Blaenavon. Based in London, McMillan is flanked by long time collaborators Stefano Amoretti (harmonium/keys) and fellow ex-Blaenavon member Frank Wright (bass) who make up the core of the project on record and on the live stage.

McMillan shares: “‘I Just Pretended’ was a late addition to our Scottish recordings. The sun had set prematurely and I was standing around on the jetty, already feeling a little wistful about leaving. The song resonated with us; it’s a series of vivid snapshots – the small feeling of loss that comes with any perfect moment that you know you’ll have to carry around with you. Trying to protect these moments as the people who made them move inexorably out of focus.”

Debut EP ‘Figurehead’ was recorded over two weeks in 2022 at Black Bay Studios, an ex-crab processing factory on the Hebridean Island of Great Bernera,

McMillan explains, “Initially these songs were a disparate bunch, each written to try and bring form and control to different phases of life, relationships and the rest. They’re the most evocative reminders I have of the past. Travelling out to the farthest reaches of Scotland to record with my friends turned these introspections into a distant cluster of songs which now seem close together. We decided to call this little cluster the Figurehead EP.”

Discussing the themes within the ‘Figurehead’ EP, McMillan continues: “Originally I hadn’t intended for there to be a connection between these songs, though it became apparent I was dealing mostly with romantic concerns. There is no real narrative or neat point to be made, rather a string of impressions and stubborn memories. They are ‘love songs’ but stripped of that convenient veneer. I hope they offer a more relatable account of the turbulence, both good and bad, that can exist within a relationship.”
