It’s early January 2019, which means every sensible buzz-watcher has their spotters badge on, watching the names being thrown around by ‘hip tastemakers’. One you’ll read A Lot is the magnificent slowthai, who is doing his metrics no harm by dropping a brand new video for latest single ‘Doorman’.
Produced by Mura Masa, the track dropped last year – the final offering in a string of singles dropped across 2018.
Speaking about the track, slowthai said: “I was at some yard in Chelsea after a night out and I saw 4.5 million pound paintings hanging on the wall and it made me sick… I went to the studio the next day and wrote Doorman. Doorman, let me in the door.”
Mura Masa added: “Slowthai is the embodiment of subversive and punk energy in UK rap. We knew we wanted to make something with a DIY, rebellious energy together, so we banged Doorman together in a few hours, kept all the original takes and let it be what it is. It’s a record that challenges ideas about what rap can be, which I think the scene needs more of. I love it.”
Now packing a dark, trippy visual that – according to a press release – “pays tribute to iconic British filmmaker Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting” – it comes ahead of a UK ‘Brexit Bandit’ run this March and April. A debut album will follow later this year.
