If you’re like us, you keep a list for Santa all year round. We don’t want to be blindsided when December comes around. Ours is a long one; it has all sorts of outlandish wishes on it – a new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album, the price of making a scratch ’n’ sniff magazine to come down, reliable mobile signal in the Dork office – but seemingly, until now, it was unaware of the one thing it really needed.
Basically, The Wombats have covered St. Vincent, and it’s – y’know – kinda great, actually.
The indie pop kingpins have had a standout 2018 so far. Most recent album ‘Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life’ is one of the best in its class, a dark heart beating beneath the three-piece’s usually chirpy top line. Proof, if needed, that the indie landfill is still a long way from The Wombats’ door.
With a lofty slot at Reading & Leeds to follow next weekend, the band have been ‘in’ to Spotify to record a pair of tracks for their Singles series. Alongside a version of recent single ‘Turn’ comes a take on St. Vincent’s ‘MASSEDUCTION’ cut ‘Los Ageless’. What it loses from Annie’s fresh-as-fuck, pin-point perfection it gains in a sort of woozy, heat-haze swoon. On paper, it seems a stretch. On record, it feels like the most natural combination in the world.
