U2 have released their version of The Pogues' 'Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah', taken from the tribute album '20th Century Paddy – The Songs Of Shane MacGowan', out on 13th November via Rubyworks.
The recording was produced by Jacknife Lee, who also plays keyboards and acoustic guitar. It follows previews from Bruce Springsteen ('A Rainy Night In Soho') and Dropkick Murphys ('The Body Of An American').
The 36-track set was put together with MacGowan's widow Victoria Mary Clarke and sister Siobhan MacGowan, and includes Hozier and Jessie Buckley on 'Fairytale Of New York', The Libertines on 'Sayonara', Primal Scream on 'A Pair Of Brown Eyes', The Jesus And Mary Chain on 'I'll Be Your Handbag', Tom Waits on 'Summer In Siam', Steve Earle, David Gray, Lisa O'Neill, The Murder Capital, Kingfishr, Johnny Depp with Imelda May, and The Pogues themselves on 'Gabrielle'. Half of all artist royalties go to Dublin Simon Community.
"Shane MacGowan was full of contradictions—and that's where the truth of him lived," The Edge says. "He could be precise about what mattered and gloriously careless about everything else. What he did with that voice was remarkable. He pulled together threads that shouldn't quite fit—folk tradition, political memory, gallows humour, romance—and made them sound inevitable. His songs sound like they have always existed."
"Shane's spirit and songwriting are eternally exalted through this glorious collection," Clarke says.
It arrives digitally and as a limited deluxe bookpack with three LPs, two CDs and a 56-page book.
