Unknown Mortal Orchestra have dropped a new single, ‘I Killed Captain Cook’, alongside a music video accompaniment.
It is their first material of the year, with their last release being ‘SB-09’, which was released last December. Their last full-length project was 2018’s ‘IC-01 Hanoi’, although this new tender showing comes from a yet-to-be-named double album, which will arrive sometime in 2023.
‘I Killed Captain Cook’ is told from the perspective of the Hawaiian that killed the titular English explorer who was largely responsible for the colonization of Polynesia and attempted to kidnap Hawaiian chief Kalaniʻōpuʻu, eventually meeting his demise in Hawai’i as a result.
The music video features vocalist Ruban Nielson‘s mother, Deedee Aipolani Nielson, who also appears on the single artwork – the tale is one she would tell her son as a child, and as such, the track is dedicated to her.
