Vinyl sales reached a twenty-five year high in 2016

David Bowie tops the list, but older releases dominate the top 10.
Vinyl sales have reached a twenty-five year high, according to the BPI.

3.2 million were sold in 2016 – a 53% rise from the previous year – with David Bowie’s final album ‘Blackstar’ topping the charts.

Interestingly, the vast majority of the top 10 best-selling releases from 2016 were older records – though Radiohead’s ‘A Moon Shaped Pool’ also fought its way to number four. The Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack album that’s in every HMV in the country finished one above at three, though.

Away from the headlines, vinyl still only accounts for 2.6% of overall music sales, though CD and download sales have dropped by 11.7% and 29.6% rapidly. It’s all streaming now, Grandad.

The top 10 best-selling vinyl for 2016 was:

1. David Bowie – ‘Blackstar’

2. Amy Winehouse – ‘Back To Black’

3. Various Artists – ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Mix 1’

4. Radiohead – ‘A Moon Shaped Pool’

5. Fleetwood Mac – ‘Rumours’

6. The Stone Roses – ‘Stone Roses’

7. Bob Marley – ‘Legend’

8. The Beatles – ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’

9. Prince – ‘Purple Rain’

10. Nirvana – ‘Nevermind’
