Support Pop Nonsense

Hello, ‘Dear Reader’

We’d like to ask you for a small favour. We have never been read by more people (hurrah! – Ed), and yet, thanks to the way the ad-funded media market operates, we earn relatively little (booo! – Ed). This publication costs time, money and work – and with proper foundations, we can continue to invest to make it bigger and better than ever before. If you’re able, we’d love it if you’d consider becoming a supporter today. It’ll only take a minute, and you’ll get loads of extra bits and pieces in return.

What does signing up as a supporter mean?

Bluntly, that you get more cool stuff. The more supporters we have, the more things we can write, shoot, make and do. There are a multitude of great music titles out there, but we like to think we’re a little different from the crowd. Dork is a magazine that prides itself in a love of pop nonsense – we want to make music more exciting, engaging, amusing and entertaining. In an era where ad budgets are dominated by big tech firms, and breaking even on simply covering your favourite bands remains a challenge, your support means we can support artists, make content and do things in a way that otherwise would be simply impossible.

Are all supporter packages available globally?

Yes – absolutely! If you’re signing up for a Digital + Print tier, though, please make sure you select the correct package for your shipping address. Posting physical magazines around the world is expensive, so if you accidentally select the wrong option, we’ll be unable to send you your print mag. Boo, etc.

How does the exclusive digital content work?

Easy – if you’re not signed in as a supporter, you’ll see a message asking you to sign up or log in. If you’re already logged into your account, you’ll be able to read it just like any other page on the website. Some pieces – for example features from our print magazine – may be first published as supporter-only, then later made accessible to all. Supporters will also have full access to the digital edition of the magazine from the day of release. You can find our supporter-only content in one easy to browse section here, and our digital library of back issues here.

Please, don’t save, screengrab and share our supporter-only content on other platforms. It’s intended as a thank you to those who back what we do, and costs money to produce. Simply crediting does not help us make magazines, or publish websites. If you want to shout about it, feel free to link and encourage others to sign up. Thanks!

What’s the difference between this and a print subscription?

Print only subscriptions just get the magazine – not all the extra digital goodies and online supporter extras. Also, they’re only billed annually. If you’re after a print-only subscription, head here.

I already have a print subscription. Can I swap it to a supporter package.

Sure, it’s pretty easy. The simplest way to do this is simply to sign up as a Digital supporter, then at the end of your print subscription upgrade to one of the other packages which include the physical magazine. Don’t worry, we’ll let you know when it’s your final subscription issue.

How many issues of the print magazine do I get?

We currently publish eleven issues of Dork a year – with a double end of year issue released in November. We’ll also occasionally publish special editions, for example, the Dork Festival Guide. We’ll let you know if these will be included in your supporter package on a case by case basis.

I just want one issue of the magazine – do I need to join as a supporter?

Nope – we sell single issues both physically and digitally. You can get print editions from our back issues section here, where you’ll also find links to purchase digital access to single issues via Issuu.

If I sign up as a supporter now, will I get the current issue?

We send out new issues to supporters in our initial post run. That means if you sign up as a supporter you’re most likely to get the next issue of Dork we announce, not the one currently on the streets. If you wish to purchase a single edition of a past or current issue, you can do so via our back issues page here. Print only subscribers can select the issue they start their subscription with. You can do that here.

Why pay for content? There’s so much free stuff online, and I don’t have the money to pay

That’s totally fine. The vast majority of the content Dork produces will continue to be available for all, free of charge. Supporter packages are simply for those who believe in investing in the stuff they like and have the disposable income to do so. To thank them for that, they’ll get a few extra goodies on top.

What is Steady?

Steady is a service that helps independent publications build exactly the kind of supporter based community you’re signing up to. They simply help provide the technology and payment processing which we then build our content on top of. You can find out more about them, and other publications they work with, at
