The past year has given us all a chance to get in touch with ourselves. Connie Constance is no different. Taking the time to tap into her upbringing, ‘Prim & Propa’ comes from a desire to combine the Nigerian folk and rock of her upbringing with the British guitar music she grew up on.
It’s brilliantly effective too. The EP’s opening title-track shows it best, a crashing, climactic banger that sounds fresh and exciting rather than a simple retread of what’s come before. Elsewhere, ‘Kids Like Us’ finds a spark of light in the darkness, while ‘Electric Girl’ rattles around with an infectious confidence.
A collection that has a bit of everything, it’s the sheer propulsive positivity that punches through. Affirmingly brilliant.
