Leeds’ finest eateries recommend us some new bands ahead of this weekend’s Christmas Indie Banquet

Food and music, what more could you want?

Leeds promoters Pizza For The People (and Dork, hello!) are hosting a Christmas Indie Banquet oop North this winter.

The gig will take place at Wharf Chambers in Leeds on 15th December, with five top new bands and some mouth-watering grub from local vegan fried chicken pop up, VFC.

Playing are Fat White Family off-shoot Warmduscher, South London quintet Hotel Lux, Hull up-and-comers Lumer, and super newbies Wilted and Polevaulter.

To celebrate, we’ve asked a few of our fave local eateries for their fave new bands.

Cattle, recommended by Dough Boys

“Cattle is like watching a fight where two blokes use drums as weapons on each other while the singer practically beats his lungs and self up using a theremin as a weapon. Got really driving bass and the added colourful noises make it sound like theme music to the apocalypse.” – James Tkaczyk-Harrison

Dough Boys are the Belgrave Music Hall’s adventurous in-house pizza slingers, serving hand-stretched pizza by the slice. Their ingredients are fresh and where possible sourced from local producers. You can always count on at least six delicious varieties with vegan options always available. belgravemusichall.com/kitchen

Chest Pains, recommended by Knaves Kitchen

“It’s no secret that Leeds is a hotbed of excellent, DIY noise at the moment and Chest Pains are up there with our favourites. Equal parts intelligent, ferocious and moving Chest Pains are a force to be reckoned with live and we’re excited to see where they take their music next!” – Ross Millar

Knave’s Kitchen is a 100% vegan street food eatery based in legendary Leeds bar Oporto, serving up guilty eats… with a conscience. There won’t be a lentil or kale leaf in sight. Expect vegan chicken realness and deep-fried delights that are always cruelty-free. knaveskitchen.com

Magick Mountain, recommended by The Brunswick

“The formative years of this band don’t need a mention (but I will for prosperity sake – Grammatics / Pulled Apart By Horses / Sky Larkin) because they stand on their own merit. Fuzzed up gnarly garage punk rock. Gives me feels of Jesus lizard (more specifically the track Nub) and Big Business with the sensibilities of Les Savy Fav and Mclusky. Their first recorded artefact Zodiac (released on Come Play With Me) is succinct and perfect in its 2:47 stature. Big riffs, total fuzz, psycho banshees whale. More please.” – Matty Wall

The Brunswick is a Pub in Leeds serving seasonal and locally sourced food, with nine keg lines, and five cask lines, and over 100 beers in the fridges. Spread over three floors, the bar on the ground, dining room on the first, and event/gallery space on the top floor. thebrunswick.co.uk

Soft Issues, recommended by Owt

“Post-Brexit noise that makes you want to take a shower afterwards. Intensely brilliant.” – Esther Miglio

Based in Leeds’ famed Kirkgate Market, one of the oldest and largest in Europe, Owt are focussed on lunches with a new menu served every week. Owt is reaffirming the tradition that markets have worldwide, to cook only what local traders are offering. By creating a new menu every week inspired by Kirkgate Market and the seasons, their goal is to reaffirm the relationship between traders, customers and themselves.

Christmas Indie Banquet will take place at Wharf Chambers in Leeds on 15th December. Tickets are on sale now, pick them up from pizzaforthepeople.co.uk.
