Alex Lahey – The Best Of Luck Club

No review score found
Artists: Alex Lahey
Label: Dead Oceans
Released: 17th May 2019
Rating: ★★★★

On her debut, Alex Lahey was an artist for whom you came for the hooks, and stayed for the heart. Two years later, she’s still seeking all the answers to life’s difficult questions. ‘The Best of Luck Club’ may contain more complex riffs and high-end production, but it’s still pop-punk at heart, which sparkles in it’s moments of highest angst – ‘Interior Demeanour’ and ‘Misery Guts’ are amongst the best of her work to date, tapping into a heavier psyche.

Playing nearly every instrument herself and writing the lyrics in marathon studio sessions, Lahey demonstrates her growth as an artist both musically and lyrically. On opener ‘I Don’t Get Invited To Parties Anymore’ she fears “her fun having gone out of the door” in the wake of her newly-nomad lifestyle, but by closer ‘I Want To Live With You’, she relaxed into the domesticity of true love, safe in the knowledge that growing up might not be so bad after all. Not all of us get to be a rock star, but her work remains relatable in the face of what is surely impending superstardom.
