Caity Baser’s ‘There I Said It’ isn’t really an EP. Not in the traditional, flung-together-singles sense. It’s eight tracks of high drama, heartache and healing, rich with purpose and theatrical flair; more concept cabaret than casual playlist filler. It opens with ‘Watch That Girl (She’s Gonna Say It)’, a spotlight moment that feels like the overture to a West End heartbreak musical. From there, the stage is well and truly hers.
‘The Story of Her’ brings a vintage sweep, gently pulling apart family pain with a velvet-gloved touch, while ‘Drank Me Dry’, with echoes of RAYE’s soulful vulnerability, is intimate to the point of uncomfortable. The centrepiece, ‘Weight of You (Glad You Died)’, does what it says on the tin: a brutally honest reflection on trauma, wrapped in strings that ache and shimmer.
‘Hymn for Him (Interlude)’ resets the tempo, a tender voice note with her grandad, before ‘Good Man’ throws you into a Gotye-style beat. But there’s a shift: ‘As I Am’ and ‘Beautiful Girl’ offer glimmers of optimism, full of self-love and vocal heft.
Produced with Oh Wonder and built on live instrumentation, the EP sounds as expensive as it is emotionally loaded. Motown melodies, soul inflexions, jazzy flirtations: it’s a rich sonic palette for a writer who’s never sounded more confident. It’s pop theatre, but the script’s hers alone. ‘There I Said It’ is Caity’s bravest work yet.
