Certified pop legends Everything But The Girl are back with their first album since way back in 1999.
‘Fuse’ is their eleventh album, and it’s fair to say the duo of classic pop royalty Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt know precisely what they’re doing. If you think of people like Romy and The xx, well, Everything But The Girl were doing this stuff decades ago, and they haven’t lost it.
‘Fuse’ is a triumph in setting the profoundly emotional and evocative core of the EBTG sound centred around Tracey’s still stunning voice into a contemporary electronic palate that feels vibrant and current as if they were a new fresh act. This is no nostalgia trip. ‘Nothing Left To Lose’ is a haunting piece of throbbing glitch pop, and the airy blissful pop of ‘No One Knows We’re Dancing’ perfectly captures the melancholy electro vibe that makes their music so compelling.
A return from an important act in British pop’s history that is well worth the wait. If you’re an old fan, you’ll be in heaven; if you’re a new listener, dive in and enjoy.
