Lauren Spencer Smith – Mirror

The vibe is sad songs about heartbreak and Lauren delivers on that 100%.

Label: Island Records/Republic Records
Released: 14th July 2023

There’s a lot to like on Lauren Spencer Smith’s heartfelt and emotional debut album ‘Mirrors’ but also a sense that is very much an artist at the start of their journey, capable of special things but searching to find their own distinctive voice.

No doubt there is immense power and poise to Lauren’s voice on big grandstanding ballads like opening duo ‘Never Been In Love’ and ‘Love Is An Overstatement’ which come across like a gen z take on the emotional epics of Adele, someone who knows more than a lot about romantic despair.

The run of ballads and sky scraping anthems including towering highlight ‘That Part’ are hugely impressive but at 15 tracks long it could do with a little bit more dynamism to lighten the heavy atmosphere just a touch. The vibe is sad songs about heartbreak and Lauren delivers on that 100%. If you’re looking for someone with an incredible voice to put their arms around you, give you a big ol’ hug and cry with you then Lauren is here.
