Wallice – The Jester

4/5
Artists: Wallice

Label: Dirty Hit
Released: 15th November 2024

A listen to any of Wallice’s earlier singles and EPs reveals that she’s just like every other twenty-something on the planet, as she chronicles the highs and lows of settling into the groove of adult life. Her debut LP, ‘The Jester’, continues her journey – except now, it’s as an artist, as well as a person just trying to find her footing.

‘The Opener’ recounts the shared experience of many small artists: being made to feel less than those they support on tour. Filled with self-deprecating lyrics about being “a Radiohead rip-off” and being forgotten once the audience leaves the room despite giving it her all every night, it’s as funny as it is a depressing reminder of the reality faced by many.

Throughout the album, she oscillates between her experiences as an artist and more personal affairs. ‘Deadbeat’ centres around the aftermath of a falling out, while ‘Hurry Babe’ sees her reflect on slowing down – not just for the sake of her health but for her relationships too.

Striking the balance between humorous and hard-hitting is difficult, but across the 46 minutes that make up ‘The Jester’, Wallice proves that she has no trouble with it at all.
