Westside Cowboy – This Better Be Something Great EP

4/5

Label: Nice Swan x Heist Or Hit
Released: 8th August 2025

Westside Cowboy sound like four people stumbling into brilliance. Their debut EP, ‘This Better Be Something Great’, is loud, loose and full of life: a perfectly titled introduction to a band who already feel like a cult favourite in the making.

It opens with ‘I’ve Never Met Anyone I Thought I Could Really Love (Until I Met You)’, a sprawling indie love song with a name too long for a poster but a chorus you’ll want to shout back. It hits like a realisation you didn’t know you were waiting for.

From there, it gets wilder. ‘Alright Alright Alright’ is a cowboy punk gallop, held together by a hilariously great slide guitar riff and a rhythm section that sounds like it’s trying to outrun itself. It’s daft and brilliant and full of energy.

‘Drunk Surfer’ is where things get interesting. Built on a Flaming Lips-inspired drum pattern and layered with stacks of cello and the sound of a nearby church bell caught on the studio mic, it’s weirdly beautiful and kind of moving.

There’s nothing polished or overly planned about this EP, and that’s its power: Westside Cowboy feel like a band discovering their sound by throwing themselves at it headfirst. Turns out that really might be something great after all.
