Black Flag is an American punk rock band formed in 1976 in Hermosa Beach, California. The band was initially called Panic and was founded by guitarist and primary songwriter Greg Ginn, along with singer Keith Morris. Ginn remained the only continuous member of the band throughout its various lineups. Black Flag is considered one of the first hardcore punk bands and a pioneer of post-hardcore. The band disbanded in 1986 and reunited in 2003 and again in 2013. During their 2013 reunion, they released their first studio album in nearly thirty years, titled What The.... The band announced a third reunion in January 2019. Their sound combined the raw simplicity of the Ramones with atonal guitar soloing reminiscent of Johnny Thunders of the New York Dolls, along with frequent tempo changes in later years. The lyrics, primarily written by Ginn, conveyed anti-authoritarian and nonconformist messages, addressing themes such as social isolation, neurosis, poverty, and paranoia. These themes were further emphasized after Henry Rollins joined as lead singer in 1981.
