Courtney Michelle Love (née Harrison), born on July 9, 1964, is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and actress. Her career has spanned four decades. She has been recognized for her influence on female-fronted alternative acts and performers. Love was raised primarily in Portland, Oregon, after a childhood marked by frequent moves and an early stint in juvenile hall. She was active in the local punk scene and played in several short-lived bands. She spent a year living in Dublin and Liverpool before returning to the United States to pursue acting. Love appeared in supporting roles in the films Sid and Nancy (1986) and Straight to Hell (1987). In 1989, she formed the band Hole with guitarist Eric Erlandson, serving as its lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist. During the 1990s, she became a prominent figure in the alternative and grunge scenes. Her marriage to Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain in 1992 and his subsequent death in 1994 received extensive media attention and temporarily overshadowed her musical career.
